Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

Belleview Blanket: A chunky blanket knitting pattern inspired by my childhood neighborhood

Belleview Blanket: A chunky blanket knitting pattern inspired by my childhood neighborhood

The Belleview Blanket is chunky, cozy and easy to knit with super bulky yarn. This is a classic blanket pattern for a cozy throw, large afghan or a little baby blanket.

This was one of my first blanket knitting patterns that I published in 2016. (Since then, I have added a lot of blanket knitting patterns to my collection!)

This week, I updated the Belleview Blanket knitting pattern to include instructions for six blanket sizes: baby blanket up to XXL afghan.

The center of the blanket features an easy to remember 8-row repeat stitch pattern that creates small repeating textured squares. The design is framed by a classic seed stitch border.

The stitch pattern will show up best with a solid color yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick super bulky in the pretty ‘Glacier’ colorway.

If you prefer worsted weight yarn, please see my selection of blanket knitting patterns designed for worsted weight yarn.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX SIZES:
This pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes so that you can choose the size that suits the user of the blanket, the size that works with the amount of yarn you have on hand, or the amount you would like to spend on the project.

Approximate sizes after blocking...

Baby Blanket: 27" wide x 27.5" long
Small Blanket: 34" wide x 36" long
Medium Blanket: 37.5" wide x 38.5" long
Large Throw: 41" wide x 49.5" long
XL Afghan: 48" wide x 54" long
XXL Afghan: 55" wide x 61" long

It’s easy to make any of the blanket sizes longer by adding additional pattern repeats. The pattern includes estimates of how much yarn is needed to add length to each blanket size.

The light blue blanket shown in the photos is the Medium size blanket.  It measures about 37.5" wide and 38.5" long.

SUPER BULKY YARN:
This pattern is designed for use with super bulky yarn. Yardage needed...

Baby: 320 - 335 yards
Small: 480 - 510 yards
Medium: 560 - 600 yards
Large: 800 - 840 yards
XL: 1010 - 1060 yards
XXL: 1270 - 1370 yards

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in the color 'Glacier'.  This yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic... it has a lovely soft, woolly texture.  This yarn is available in a wide range of color options. The best place to find the full selection of color choices is on the Lion Brand website.

If you prefer worsted weight yarn, please see my  Piece of Home blanket knitting pattern or my selection of knitting patterns for worsted weight yarn.

This blanket would also look wonderful knit with Lion Brand Hometown super bulky. This is a great yarn choice if you prefer a yarn without wool.  There are many pretty colorways available in Hometown super bulky including: 'Dallas Grey' (I used this color with my Over the Rooftops blanket knitting pattern and Westport Blanket chunky blanket knitting pattern), 'Houston Cream', ‘Tampa Spice’ (rich brick red) and ‘Louisville Julep’ (pale aqua).

The stitch pattern texture will show up best with solid color yarns.

Be sure to purchase additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.  The pattern includes estimates on how much additional yarn is required to add pattern repeats.

A seed stitch border frames the blanket design. The stitch pattern is easy to remember and knits up quickly with super bulky yarn.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

The Belleview Blanket is named for a street in the neighborhood where I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.  The design reminds me of the charming 1920's homes lined up in an orderly fashion on the streets of the Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City.

Additionally, this beautiful ‘Glacier’ colorway in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick super bulky yarn reminds me of my childhood home.  Our dining room walls were a very similar shade of blue.  This color instantly transports me back to another time and place… bringing back fond memories of holiday dinners with my family.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on US 13 circular needles. Circular knitting needles are necessary in order to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket. Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.

I used US size 13 circular Knitter's Pride Nova Platina knitting needles that are 32” in length.  I've used them for many projects and would definitely recommend these knitting needles.

Another knitting needle option is these beautiful ChiaoGoo Bamboo US 13 circular needles that are 40” long.

Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension.  The goal is to find the knitting needle that gives the best stitch appearance, without being too tight... or too loose.

SKILLS NEEDED:

The Belleview Blanket pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter. If you know how to knit and purl, and change back and forth from one to the other confidently then you probably have the skills to knit this blanket.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

TIP FOR CLEAN EDGES:

To keep the edges 'clean'... transition from one skein of yarn to the next somewhere in the middle of a row.  It's easier to hide the woven-in ends in the center of a row on the wrong side of your knitting.

BLOCKING RECOMMENDED:

For best appearance, blocking of the finished blanket is highly recommended.

Click here to see all of my blocking tips including step-by-step photos.

Knitters often ask if my blanket patterns are reversible... this one is not reversible.  This blanket definitely looks prettier on the "right side".

WHAT I’M READING:

This month, I read The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. This historical fiction novel centers on five women who join the Depression era effort to get books to people living in remote areas through an organization called the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. Get more details on this beautifully written book on Bookshop.org or Amazon.

Coincidently, a couple of months ago I read another novel that has the same setting and incorporates the story of the packhorse librarians - The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. (Bookshop.org | Amazon)

Thank you so much for reading!

Happy knitting!
