Chunky Blanket Knitting Pattern - Over the Rooftops
Three years ago, I published my ‘Over the Rooftops’ blanket knitting pattern for super bulky yarn. I was completely unprepared for the enthusiastic welcome this pattern received at the time! And, I’m really touched that it has remained a customer favorite!
As of March 2020, the Over the Rooftops blanket pattern has a 4.9 out of 5 start clarity rating on Ravelry.
This chunky blanket is quick and easy to knit with super bulky yarn. The pattern includes instructions for five blanket sizes. Read all the details below!
The pattern is also available on Etsy and LoveKnitting.

CUSTOMER PROJECTS:
Last year, I heard from a knitter who has made the ‘Over the Rooftops’ blanket more than 20 times…one for each person in her family: children, grandchildren, in-laws and more. It is heartwarming to hear how knitters use my patterns to show their love for their family and friends.
As of early February 2020, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 120 ‘Over the Rooftops’ blanket projects including this lovely gray blanket and this stunning earthy orange blanket knit with two strands of worsted weight yarn held together. A few other knitters have shared their Over the Rooftops blanket projects on Instagram with the #overtherooftopsblanket tag.
INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
If you are a fan of the movie Mary Poppins then you have probably guessed the inspiration for the name of this pattern. One of my favorite scenes is when Bert (played by Dick Van Dyke) and the chimney sweeps dance to the song "Step in Time"...which includes the words "over the rooftops". I love watching them dance across the rooftops of London. The texture of this blanket reminded me of city rooftops!

I love knitting blankets with super bulky yarn. For this blanket I used Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarn in the color 'Dallas Grey'. This yarn is very economically priced and is very soft and cozy. I really enjoy knitting with this yarn.
This pattern will work well with many super bulky yarns. As noted above, I used Lion Brand Hometown. The pattern will also work very well with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick.
Solid color yarn is recommend for best appearance of the stitch pattern.

SPEAKING OF APPEARANCE:
Customers often wonder what this blanket looks like on the back. I do not consider this pattern reversible. Here’s a view of the wrong side of the blanket…
BLOCKING RECOMMENDED:
Blocking of the finished blanket is highly recommended! The stitch pattern in the center of the blanket tends to pull together if it is not blocked.
Here's what my blanket looked like before blocking...
Notice how the center of the blanket bunches together. Taking the time to block the finished blanket makes a huge difference in the appearance of this design. Blocking your knitting is not hard!

Here is the same blanket after blocking...
NEEDLES:
The project is worked flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles. Circular knitting needles are necessary in order to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket. If you need more information on knitting a blanket with circular knitting needles…click here to read my blog post on this topic.
I used US size 15 knitting needles. Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension. The goal is to find the knitting needle that gives the best stitch appearance, without being too tight...or too loose.
GAUGE:
8 stitches and 12 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch
SKILLS NEEDED:
This is an easy pattern to knit for a confident knitter. You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, change back and forth from knit to purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
Even with an easy pattern, stitch markers are helpful for keeping track of the pattern changes. The green circle markers shown in the photo below are Clover Jumbo Ring Stitch Markers.
