Light in the Window: Modern Color-Block Blanket Knitting Pattern
The Light in the Window blanket is modern, colorful and super easy to knit! The color-block design features five colorways from the Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn collection.
The blanket is knit entirely in garter stitch in three rectangular panels, making it a perfect on-the-go knitting project. A relaxing knit for beginners or experienced knitters.
The PDF knitting pattern includes step-by-step finishing tips for seaming the three panels, as well as instructions for two blanket sizes.

EASY TO KNIT:
This blanket project is a perfect choice for a beginner! If you are an experienced knitter… you’ll love that this blanket is easy to knit while watching a movie or spending time with friends.
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit confidently, read a knitting pattern written in English using standard US knitting terms, and bind off stitches.
The PDF pattern includes detailed, step-by-step finishing instructions for sewing up the seams with yarn and a tapestry needle.
Pick your favorite yarn colors to make your blanket one-of-a-kind!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR TWO BLANKET SIZES:
Large Throw: 39” wide x 48” long
XL Afghan: 45” wide x 60” long
Buy the PDF pattern here on my website or on Ravelry.
KNITTING NEEDLES:
Since the blanket is knit in three panels, straight or circular needles may be used.
I used US 8 knitting needles.
GAUGE:
Garter stitch with US size 8 needles: approximately 16 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches.
Take time to check your gauge! Cast on 25 stitches and knitting at least 5” in garter stitch. Count the number of stitches across 4” a row of knitting in the center of your test swatch.
If you have more than 25 stitches in 4” of knitting… try one needle size smaller.
If you have less than 25 stitches across 4” of knitting… try one needle size larger.
A significantly different gauge may require more (or less) yarn and impact the finished size of your blanket.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
Late at night in any neighborhood, at any time of year, one can find residences with a light on in the window. The light could be on for so many reasons: someone is watching a movie, or reading a good book, or working late to meet a deadline, or studying for school, or caring for a young child… or perhaps the light was left on for a family member who will be arriving home late.
This garter stitch blanket is easy to knit with your choice of five yarn colors. Select a bright or light color for the focal point in the center panel to symbolize the light in the window… a light that represents care and love.
In the sample blanket below, I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling in the ‘Mustard’ colorway for Color E as my ‘bright or light’ colorway. See list of all colorways used below.

COLOR COMBINATION IDEAS:
This color-block blanket design can be used with unlimited combinations of five colorways. Here are just a few combinations to consider using Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling #4 weight yarn.
OPTION 1 - DENIM AND PINE
Keep the two gray heather colorways the same - Charcoal Heather and Silver Heather - and change B, D and E.
For example… I’m working on an XL afghan blanket using Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn in Deep Denim Heather, Pine Heather and Beige Heather (for the light or bright color). I’m more than halfway through the blanket and I can already tell that it will be a favorite cozy blanket for our house!
OPTION 2 - BLUSH PINK AND GREEN
Make one change from Option #1 for a modern pink & green combination. Replace Color B with Blush Heather #409.
OPTION 3 - FALL INSPIRATION
For a fall inspired color palette… change colorways B & D to Pumpkin and Olive:
Color A: Silver Heather #404
Color B: Pumpkin #133
Color C: Charcoal Heather #403
Color D: Olive #132
Color E: Beige Heather #410
OPTION 4 - LOVELY SKEIN TONES
Choose five colors from the selection of 12 beautiful Skein Tones colorways in the Lion Brand Basic Stitch collection. The possibilities are endless!
