Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

Little Moments Blanket: Inspired by Cherished Memories of Life's Little Moments

Little Moments Blanket: Inspired by Cherished Memories of Life's Little Moments

Little Moments blanket knitting pattern is easy to knit with bulky weight yarn.  And, this blanket design is reversible!  An easy to remember six-row stitch pattern creates an interesting texture that looks the same on both sides of the blanket.

The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes.  Read all the details below!

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

My new blanket design is inspired by many cherished memories of little moments...

reading a book to a child at bedtime
singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to a loved one
chatting in the car on the way to school
baking the same cookies every year
gathering for a holiday dinner
listening to life stories of older relatives
building a snowman on a winter day
going to an orchard to pick apples
meeting friends for lunch in the park

It’s the little moments in life that make wonderful memories.

UPDATE - A COUPLE LOVELY PROJECTS:

It’s really fun to see how knitters use my blanket knitting patterns! Christine made this lovely throw using Berroco Comfort Chunky in the ‘Driftwood’ colorway. She said this is one of three Fifty Four Ten Studio blanket designs she has knit during the 2020 stay-at-home time.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes.  Approximate sizes after blocking:

Baby Blanket: 28.5" wide x 35” long
Small Blanket: 33” wide x 40” long

Large Throw: 41” wide x 52” long

I made the large blanket size which is about 41" wide x 52" long.  I love how it turned out!

I used Lion Brand Color Made Easy bulky weight yarn in the ‘Millennial’ colorway. See lots of yarn suggestions below!

BULKY YARN SUGGESTIONS - 2021 UPDATE:

I used Lion Brand Yarn 'Color Made Easy' bulky weight yarn in the colorway 'Millennial'.  Unfortunately, Color Made Easy yarn has been discontinued.

However, this pattern will also work well with many other bulky weight yarns. Click here to see my blog post about 15 bulky weight yarns for blanket knitting. Here’s a few options to consider:

Cascade 128 Superwash - 100% Merino Wool - Beautiful selection of colorways.

Berroco Comfort Chunky - Acrylic / Nylon Blend - Easy care - popular choice for blankets. Nice selection of colors.

Berroco Vintage Chunky - Acrylic / Wool / Nylon blend - Lovely yarn in classic color options.

Plymouth Encore Chunky - Acrylic / Wool Blend - Machine washable, easy care and affordably priced.

IF YOU PREFER WORSTED WEIGHT YARN:

If you prefer worsted weight yarn…please see my These Days Blanket knitting pattern. (shown below) The reversible, geometric stitch pattern is the same but all instructions are specifically suited for worsted weight yarn.

These Days Blanket knitting pattern uses the same stitch pattern as the Little Moments blanket… but all directions are suited for worsted weight yarn. Click here to learn more about this pattern.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

The project is worked flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles.  Circular knitting needles are necessary in order to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket.

I used US size 10.5 knitting needles for my Little Moments blanket.  For this project, I used a very old set of circular needles that were honestly sort of annoying. The cord is very stiff. I need to replace this set with my current favorite needles…Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina circular. I like a 32” length.

For a less expensive knitting needle, I also like Clover Takumi Bamboo circular needles. I have several sets of these needles and use them often! (The cord can be a little stiff at first but hold it in warm water for a bit to loosen it up.)

Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension.  The goal is to find the knitting needle that gives the best stitch appearance, without being too tight...or too loose.

SKILLS NEEDED:

This is an easy knitting project that requires a bit of attention to stay on track with the six-row repeat pattern.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, change back and forth from knit to purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of the finished blanket is suggested, but not essential for this pattern.  Click here to see my blog post for tips and information about blocking a blanket.

CURRENTLY READING:

This month I’m reading a lovely book called Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson. The story starts when Tina writes a letter to a museum. She doesn’t necessarily expect a reply but she receives one from the older museum curator. I won’t tell you anymore than it’s a gentle story of friendship. Shop: Bookshop.org | Amazon

I also recently finished Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. I read this one in just a few days! Set in Shaker Heights, Ohio, it focuses on the lives of two families with teenagers in the modern but pre-cell phone era. There’s drama and misunderstandings… and I could not put it down.
