Even though the yarn is meticulously displayed, I can say from experience that customers are encouraged to touch the yarn!
Yarn Social was founded in 2018 by Trish - a native of Kansas City who returned to her hometown to explore a new career path. I first met Trish in October 2018 when she was making plans to open her yarn shop. She invited me to stop by a few weeks before opening the shop. There was an incredibly long list of tasks to accomplish before the grand opening of the shop. My Making Plans blanket knitting pattern was inspired by meeting Trish and watching from a distance as she founded this special yarn shop… Yarn Social.
Trish and her staff are knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming to all knitters and makers.
Yarn Social offers in store shopping at in their charming shop in the West Plaza neighborhood, as well as online shopping on the Yarn Social website.
As the store name implies, social connection is a big part of Yarn Social’s mission. Several weekly social hour events are hosted in the shop’s “living room”.
If you live in the Kansas City area, or ever find yourself visiting, be sure to set aside a bit of time to visit Yarn Social. It's very close to The Plaza and Westport areas... and not far from downtown Kansas City.

FAVORITE KANSAS CITY PLACES:
Many fun locally owned stores and special places to visit in Kansas City happen to be a short drive from Yarn Social. Here are some of my favorites KC spots in the Westport, Plaza, Crestwood and Brookside neighborhoods:
Pryde’s: This “hardware store for cooks” is located in a historic brick building in Old Westport. It’s been in business for more than 50 years (in the same family!) and it’s the best.
Kauffman Gardens: Free public garden located in the heart of Kansas City. Open every day. No entry fee. A lovely place to visit for a short walk around the garden.
Andre’s Chocolates: Amazing Swiss style chocolates and pastries. This locally owned shop is a fun stop for a delicious treat. Breakfast and lunch are a special experience. Located on Main Street, south of the Country Club Plaza.
The National Museum of Toys & Miniatures: A huge collection of toys that span generations, historic dollhouses and fine-scale miniatures. Allow at least an hour or two for a visit.
Tea Market: Offers an amazing selection of specialty loose leaf teas. My favorites teas from Tea Market are Wake-Up Chai, KC Dynasty, Energize and Vanilla Bean. Located in the charming Crestwood Shops on 55th Street.
A Store Named Stuff: A fun, cheerful, locally owned shop offering an eclectic selection of gifts and home décor. Located in the historic Brookside Shops on 63rd Street. HomeGrown (on the same block) is a great option for breakfast and lunch in Brookside.
MAKING PLANS BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:
One of my best selling knitting patterns was inspired by meeting Trish when she was getting ready to open Yarn Social.
Each little purl stitch in the center of the Making Plans blanket represents the numerous little tasks that must be completed when making plans…especially big plans. Every big step in life requires the accomplishment of many small details in order to achieve the bigger goal: starting a new business, changing jobs, graduating from school, welcoming a child to the family, moving to a new home, starting college, celebrating a wedding… and so much more.
Get more details and purchase the Making Plans blanket knitting pattern on my website or Ravelry.
Trish introduced me to one of my favorite yarns for knitting blankets! For this project… as well as many of my other blanket knitting patterns… I used Blue Sky Fibers Sweater yarn in the ‘Firefly’ colorway. This lovely yarn is made of 55% superwash wool and 45% certified organic cotton. The stitch definition is fantastic… making interesting knit and purl stitch patterns look their best. Shop for Blue Sky Fibers Sweater yarn on the Yarn Social website.
Thanks for taking a minute to check out my collection of knitting patterns!
