Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

Meadow Lane Blanket - Free Knitting Pattern for Worsted #4 Weight Yarn

Meadow Lane Blanket - Free Knitting Pattern for Worsted #4 Weight Yarn

The Meadow Lane Blanket is easy to knit with worsted or Aran #4 weight yarn. This blanket knitting pattern works beautifully with solid color or variegated yarns. It’s a great choice for showing off the interesting color changes in a hand-dyed yarn.

The free PDF knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes including baby blanket, throw and large afghan.

Meadow Lane blanket is the lighter weight version of The Boulevard Blanket… my popular free knitting pattern for super bulky yarn.

See details below to download the free PDF pattern!

An easy to knit stitch pattern creates a simple, modern appearance.

At first glance, you may think that the Meadow Lane Blanket is knit with garter stitch... but look again! An easy K4, P4 repeat stitch pattern creates a subtle vertical striping effect.  The result is a completely reversible blanket!

The Meadow Lane blanket knitting pattern was originally published in 2017. I recently updated the pattern instructions to reflect the gauge, yardage and measurements from a new project sample.

The Meadow Lane Blanket is very easy to knit. I used Lion Brand Heartland in the ‘Rocky Mountains’ colorway. This yarn is available in an attractive selection of colorways on the Lion Brand website.

This is a great pattern for any level of knitter! I love hearing from beginning knitters who say this pattern helped increase their confidence in knitting.

Experienced knitters will find this pattern is the perfect project to work on while watching TV or chatting with friends and family.

Like most of my blanket knitting patterns there are instructions for six blanket sizes so you can pick the size that suits the user of the blanket and your budget for the project.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

Baby Blanket: 28" wide x 30" long
Small Blanket: 30" wide x 36" long
Medium Throw: 34" wide x 37" long
Large Throw: 38" wide x 44" long
XL Afghan: 42" wide x 46" long
XXL Afghan: 47" wide x 50" long

It’s easy to adjust any size to meet your project needs. The PDF knitting pattern includes instructions on how to make the blanket wider and longer. To make any blanket longer… simply keep knitting additional rows and bind off on any row.

WORSTED OR ARAN #4 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 670 - 700 yards
Small: 850 - 880 yards
Medium: 1000 - 1050 yards
Large: 1300 - 1400 yards
XL: 1500 - 1600 yards
XXL: 1850 - 1950 yards

The PDF pattern includes estimates for how much yardage is needed to add 2" in length to each blanket size.

I used Lion Brand Heartland acrylic yarn in the ‘Rocky Mountains’ colorway. To make the Medium size blanket I used 4 skeins of Lion Brand Heartland (about 1000 yards). The green blanket in the photos was a gift for my nephew’s baby boy. The yarn has a soft texture that is perfect for a baby blanket… or a cozy throw for a family room.

I used the Meadow Lane Blanket to knit a blanket for my nephew’s baby boy. The yarn is Lion Brand Heartland in the ‘Rocky Mountains’ colorway. This blanket turned out soft and cozy.

WORSTED & ARAN #4 WEIGHT YARN SUGGESTIONS:

This project looks interesting and attractive with either solid color or multi-colored yarns.

For best appearance, choose a yarn with good stitch definition.

Chenille yarns are not a good option for this pattern because the structure of the yarn is too soft.

Note for Beginning Knitters: Beginning knitters might want to stick with a solid color yarn. Heavily variegated yarns can make it a bit challenging to see the details when knitting the stitch pattern. Also, beginners might want to avoid a really dark yarn color as it can be challenging to see the stitches. However, if you feel confident about your knitting skills… choose the yarn color that appeals to you!

Here are a few yarn options to consider:

Lion Brand Heartland (100% Acrylic) - Very soft with nice stitch definition. Pretty heathered and tweedy colorways are named for American landmarks including U.S. National Parks. I used the ‘Rocky Mountains’ colorway for the blanket shown in the photos. Many of the colorways will work nicely for a modern baby blanket. Machine wash gentle cycle. Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling (100% Acrylic) - This is not your grandmother’s 1970’s acrylic yarn! It’s very soft to the touch… not scratchy or ‘sticky’. I used this yarn for my Light in the Window blanket pattern design and I’m very pleased with the results. Available in more than 30 attractive solid colorways. Ravelry knitters rate this yarn 4.3 out of 5 stars. Machine washable and dryable. Shop: LionBrand.com | Amazon

Knit Picks Brava Worsted (100% Acrylic) - I did some test knitting with this yarn on US 8 knitting needles and found that it has a nice texture with very good stitch definition. Affordable, easy care yarn that is available in more than 45 pretty colorways. Machine wash and dry. Shop: Exclusively from KnitPicks.com

Berroco Vintage (52% Acrylic / 40% Wool / 8% Nylon) – I used this yarn for my Temperature Blanket knitting project and loved the results! Ravelry knitters have shared more than 3,000 hand knit blanket projects using this yarn. And, they give the yarn a 4.4 out of 5 star rating. Machine washable.  Shop: Jimmy Beans Wool | Local Yarn Shops | LoveCrafts | WEBS Yarn Store

Malabrigo Rios (100% Superwash Merino) - This is a lovely hand-dyed yarn that is available in a wide range of interesting colorways. Machine washable, lay flat to dry. Be sure to block it to gauge as the superwash yarn does stretch when wet. Shop: Local Yarn Shops | Jimmy Beans Wool | LoveCrafts

Knit Picks Swish Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool) - With more than 45,000 projects shared on Ravelry this yarn appears to be one of the top three most actively used superwash wool yarns on the market. Ravelry knitters rate it 4.4 out of 5 stars. Available in more than 45 colorways. Machine wash separately in cold water on delicate cycle. Tumble dry on low setting. KNITTING NEEDLES:

The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on circular knitting needles.

I used US size 8 circular knitting needles for my green blanket made with Lion Brand Heartland in the ‘Rocky Mountains’ colorway.

Do some test knitting with your yarn and at least two needle sizes. Follow the stitch pattern in the PDF pattern. Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension.

Exact gauge is not important. However, this stitch pattern looks best with fairly tight knitting.  The vertical stripe effect will not show up as distinctly with loose knitting.

Long circular knitting needles are recommended to accommodate all of the stitches easily. Click here to see my blog post about knitting a blanket with long circular needles.
