Every Now and Then Blanket: Chunky Striped Throw Knitting Pattern for Super Bulky Yarn
My new chunky striped blanket knitting pattern is knit entirely in garter stitch. It’s easy to knit and beginner friendly!
The Every Now & Then blanket knitting pattern features three colorways from the Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick collection. The pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick or Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarns. Lots more details about yarn options below.
Purchase this pattern here on this website or on Ravelry.
This chunky throw blanket knits up quickly with super bulky #6 weight yarn and US 13 knitting needles.
There are unlimited color combinations that will work for this chunky striped blanket pattern.
When selecting your three color choices for this striped blanket… consider using two medium or dark yarn colors paired with one light colorway.
INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
Every now and then…
· a small surprise brightens the day
· a snowfall is perfect for building a snowman
· a moment brings joy
· a day is filled with fun and laughter
· a great book transports the reader to another place and time
· a song on the radio brings back long forgotten memories.
And, every now and then wrapping up in a cozy blanket, reading a good book and sipping hot tea is a perfect way to relax at the end of a day.

KNIT A LARGE CHUNKY THROW:
The PDF pattern has instructions for a large throw which measures approximately 40” wide x 48” long.
To make blanket longer purchase more of Color A (shown in blue in photos). Work a couple more rows for bottom and top stripes and add desired number of extra inches for large center stripe (blue). Each additional 2” of length requires approximately 45 - 50 yards.
LION BRAND SUPER BULKY #6 WEIGHT YARN:
This striped blanket pattern features three colors of super bulky #6 weight yarn. (Knit single strand.)
I used Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick super bulky in Night Sky (Color A), Whipped Cream (Color B) and Olive Branch (Color C).
The yarn is spun from 100% recycled plastics. This was the first project I made with this yarn and I was pleasantly surprised by the soft texture and nice stitch definition. Generously sized skeins contain 223 yards (340 grams).
Yardage needed:
Color A: 440 - 450 yards (2 skeins Re-Spun Thick & Quick)
Color B: 215 - 225 yards (1 skein Re-Spun Thick & Quick)
Color C: 320 - 330 yards (about 1.5 skeins Re-Spun Thick & Quick)
This yarn is available in an attractive collection of muted colorways including ‘Cider’, ‘Raven’ (dark charcoal gray), ‘Evergreen’ and ‘Pumice Stone’. Hand wash and lay flat to dry. Shop for Re-Spun Thick & Quick: LionBrand.com | Amazon

OTHER SUPER BULKY YARN OPTIONS:
In addition to Re-Spun Thick & Quick, Lion Brand offers two other super bulky #6 weight yarns that will work great with this pattern:
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic / 20% Wool) – I have used this yarn for many of my chunky blanket knitting patterns. Great stitch definition. Offered in a wide selection of attractive colorways including: ‘Slate’, ‘Charcoal’, ‘Cilantro’, ‘Denim’, ‘Peanut’, ‘Mustard’ and ‘Spice’. The ‘Fisherman’ colorway is a lovely creamy neutral that would work well for Color B (light stripes).
10 skeins of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in solid colorways:
Color A: 440 - 450 yards (about 4.3 skeins Wool-Ease Thick & Quick)
Color B: 215 - 225 yards (2 skeins Wool-Ease Thick & Quick)
Color C: 320 - 330 yards (3 skeins Wool-Ease Thick & Quick)
A note about yardage: Solid colorways have 106 yards per skein. Multi-color or ‘print’ colorways have 87 yards per skein (more skeins required than listed above). Machine washable and dryable. Shop for Wool-Ease Thick & Quick: LionBrand.com | LoveCrafts | Amazon
Lion Brand Hometown (100% Acrylic) – I have used this economically priced yarn for many of my chunky blanket knitting pattern designs including River of Dreams bed runner blanket and Over the Rooftops blanket. This yarn is very soft but also has great stitch definition.
13 skeins of Hometown in solid colorways:
Color A: 440 - 450 yards (about 5.5 skeins Hometown)
Color B: 215 - 225 yards (3 skeins Hometown)
Color C: 320 - 330 yards (4 skeins Hometown)
Note about yardage: Solid colorways have 81 yards per skein and “print” colorways have 64 yards per skein. If using a multi-color yarn color, you will need more skeins than noted above. Machine washable and dryable. Shop for Hometown: LionBrand.com | LoveCrafts | Amazon in single skein or multi-skein packs

KNITTING NEEDLES:
The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on US 13 circular needles, 28” - 40” in length. Circular knitting needles are necessary to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket. Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.
My favorite circular knitting needles are Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina metal circular needles. Here’s a link to a set of US 13 circular needles with a 40” cord that would be perfect for this project. The cord is very flexible and sturdy… but not annoying! (The cords on some circular needles are too stiff and can be sort of a pain!)
GAUGE:
Garter stitch with US size 13 needles: 10 stitches & 18 rows (9 garter ridges) = 4”
Take time to check gauge by casting on 25 stitches and knit every row (garter stitch) for at least 6”. A different gauge may require more more (or less) yarn and impact finished size.
If your gauge swatch has fewer than 10 stitches per 4”… try one needle size smaller.
If your gauge swatch has more than 10 stitches per 4”… try one needle size larger.
EASY TO KNIT:
The Every Now & Then Blanket pattern is very easy to knit. The project is perfect for beginners! And, a relaxing knit for experienced knitters.
If you know how to cast on stitches, work the knit stitch, read a written knitting pattern in English and bind off stitches… then you have the skills to make this blanket. If you need some tips for weaving in the ends of yarn… see my blog post with step-by-step photos.
