Five Modern and Easy to Knit Baby Blanket Knitting Patterns
Every day, I hear from knitters who are knitting blankets for babies. They make blankets for their co-worker’s first child, their cousin’s new baby, their first niece or nephew, or their grandchild. I also hear from new parents who knit special blankets as they await the arrival of the newest member of their family. Each of these blankets is made with love in every stitch.
This blog post features five modern and easy-to-knit baby blanket knitting patterns from my collection of blanket knitting patterns. These “beginner friendly” knitting patterns use only knit and purl stitches.
When giving a hand knit blanket as a baby gift… I love to include one or two children’s books that we enjoyed reading with our kids when they were young. (It’s hard to believe they are both in their 20’s now!) See some of our family’s favorite children’s books on Bookshop.org or Amazon.
A REVERSIBLE BLANKET FEATURING MODERN TRIANGLES:
These Days Blanket features a six-row repeat stitch pattern that creates a modern ‘triangle-in-a-square’ texture that is reversible. The blanket looks exactly the same on both sides. The PDF pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes from baby blanket up to XXL afghan.
This pattern will work well with many worsted #4 weight yarns. Keep in mind that the triangle stitch pattern will show up best with a solid color yarn. Click here to see my favorite worsted yarns for blanket knitting.
If you prefer to use bulky #5 weight yarn… see my Little Moments Blanket knitting pattern.
The name for this pattern was inspired by the boxes on my paper calendar where I write notes about each day. Some days bring life’s biggest challenges. Other days bring happy, memorable occasions. Keeping notes on my calendar about each day helps me remember to enjoy these days.
I’m so happy that so many knitters have enjoyed using this pattern! As of February 2022, Ravelry knitters have shared 130 projects using this pattern. The pattern has a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars on Ravelry for overall results and 5 out of 5 stars for clarity of instructions.
The pattern can also be purchased on Ravelry and Etsy.
MORE TRIANGLES - A MODERN & REVERSIBLE BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:
Touch of Kindness blanket knitting pattern is also reversible. The all-over triangle design is created by a 10-row repeat stitch pattern.
This pattern is a bit more challenging than the These Days Blanket (above) but uses only knit and purl stitches.
This blanket pattern is designed for worsted, heavy worsted or Aran #4 weight yarn.
I used Blue Sky Fibers Sweater organic cotton and superwash wool yarn in the ‘Sea Horse’ colorway. This is one of my favorite worsted weight yarns for blanket knitting.
A solid color yarn with good stitch definition will show off the stitch pattern best.
It is said that kindness is always in season. As I knit this little blue blanket, the repeating triangles in this design made me think of reaching our arms out to one another… with a touch of kindness.
The pattern is also available on Ravelry and on Etsy.
A GEOMETRIC, REVERSIBLE BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:
The Days to Come is perfect for baby blanket knitting, as well as larger throw blankets. The pattern includes directions for six blanket sizes so you can pick the size that suits your project needs.
This stitch pattern looks lovely with a solid color yarn or a gently variegated hand dyed yarn. For example, I used Malabrigo Rios hand dyed yarn for my Room with a View scarf design that features the same stitch pattern.
Whether you are looking ahead to next week or later this year, may you find that the days to come bring moments of joy, happiness and celebration.

MY BEST SELLING BLANKET PATTERN THAT IS EASY TO KNIT:
The On the Porch blanket has been a customer favorite over the last several years. It’s very easy to knit and beginner friendly! But, experienced knitters also enjoy this pattern as a relaxing knitting project.
The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes so you can choose the size that suits your project needs. Get more details on size options here.
For the off-white blanket shown below, I used Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton Worsted in the ‘Drift’ colorway. This yarn is lovely! It’s a “heavy worsted” that is very soft and luxurious. Shop for the yarn: Jimmy Beans Wool |The Woolery | Local Yarn Shops
Pair this pattern with a solid color or gently variegated hand dyed worsted or Aran weight yarn.
As an example of how this pattern works with a hand dyed yarn… this one-of-a-kind baby blanket (below) was made by my dear friend. She used Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus Dappled in the 'Lily by the Sea' colorway. Click here to see my blog post with all the details about this baby blanket project.
The pattern also works well with economically priced acrylic yarns such as Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling or Knit Picks Brava worsted.
See lots more yarn suggestions in my blog post about worsted weight yarns for blanket knitting.
The On the Porch blanket knitting pattern was named for childhood memories of summer evenings on my grandparent’s screened porch. The simple textured stripe design reminds me of the old, painted wood floor of their porch.
As of February 2022, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 250 projects!

A BEGINNER FRIENDLY SUMMER BABY BLANKET:
The Summer Sidewalk blanket is a perfect choice for an easy to knit, modern baby blanket. This pattern is beginner friendly! I love hearing for new knitters who have enjoyed using this pattern to knit a special baby blanket for gift giving.
The pattern is very flexible and can be used with DK, light worsted or worsted weight yarn.
If you prefer super bulky #6 weight yarn… see my Where the Sidewalk Ends blanket knitting pattern.
This pattern will work well with many DK or worsted weight yarns in various fiber content… acrylic, cotton, superwash wool or a blend of fibers.
The blue blanket shown above was made with a 5.5 skeins of Tahki Cotton Classic (discontinued colorway). Another great cotton yarn option is Knit Picks Shine Worsted. See more yarn options in my blog post about favorite worsted yarns for blanket knitting.
As of February 2022, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 185 projects using this pattern. The pattern is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars for overall results and clarity of instructions.
