I'm frequently asked... what do you do with all the blankets you knit?
At least once a month someone asks me… what do you do with all the blankets that you knit? It’s a great question… since I have knit more than 40 blankets for my blanket knitting pattern collection in the last five years.
Here’s a look at how a few of the blankets are being used and enjoyed…
TWO BLANKETS FOR A FIRST APARTMENT:
Recently, our daughter moved into her first apartment! She pulled together a comfy living space using items we had around the house, treasures found at thrift stores, and a couple of new pieces to fill in where needed.
When we were looking for storage bins she could use for packing, we ran across my dark gray North of the River blanket. She enthusiastically asked if she could use this chunky cable blanket in her bedroom. Of course!
For the ‘North of the River’ blanket project, I used Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarn in ‘Chicago Charcoal’. This yarn is very soft with great stitch definition. See the complete selection of this yarn on the Lion Brand Yarn website.
In case you are wondering… the subtle striped bedding and the white rectangular pillow are from IKEA. The two orange pillows were purchased at World Market.
The ‘North of the River’ blanket knitting pattern includes instructions for three blanket sizes. The large size blanket is shown here - it’s about 45” wide x 56” long. It’s super cozy!
Purchase the ‘North of the River’ blanket knitting pattern here on my website, on Ravelry or in my Esty shop.
She’s also using the ‘Game Time’ blanket in her apartment. The mustard yellow blanket is a nice pop of color on a grey chair… in a room with off-white walls. This yarn is Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in ‘Mustard’.

I’m thrilled that she wanted to include two of my chunky hand knit blankets in her carefully curated space.
A COZY LAYER FOR THE GUEST ROOM:
This is still one of my favorite knitting projects from the last few years. My ‘River of Dreams’ bed runner blanket adds a layer of coziness and texture to our guest room.
I finished this bed runner a couple years ago and it has been at the foot of the bed in our guest room ever since. The giant cable pattern adds interest and texture to neutral décor.
The River of Dreams bed runner blanket is fun to knit with super bulky yarn. Basic cable knitting experience is recommended.
The pattern includes instructions for four bed runner sizes: twin, full, queen and king size accent blankets. (Note: this is an accent blanket that is not designed to cover the entire bed.)
I used Lion Brand Hometown super bulky in ‘Springfield Silver’. The best place to find the full selection of colorways is on the Lion Brand website. A few of my favorite colorways in this yarn are ‘Dallas Grey’, ‘Chicago Charcoal’ and ‘Houston Cream’… and ‘Tampa Spice’ is really gorgeous for a fall look.

A BLANKET INSPIRED BY SPECIAL MEMORIES FOR THE LIVING ROOM:
Sometimes simply a color – a yarn color – can bring back vivid memories. That’s what happened with this gorgeous Malabrigo Rios yarn in the 'Azul Profundo' colorway. This rich, dark navy blue reminded me of evenings at my grandparents’ house. The window seat at their house stretched across the entire width of the living room. In the evenings, as the sky grew darker, the old windows over the window seat were transformed into a wall of glistening, inky dark blue.
My Window Seat blanket has a special place in our living room.
The Window Seat blanket knitting pattern is designed for worsted #4 weight yarn.
The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes from baby blanket up to XXL afghan.
I used 7 skeins of Malabrigo Rios to make the XL size blanket which is about 41” wide x 43.5” long. The blanket is folded neatly on the arm of a loveseat size couch.

A CHUNKY BLANKET FOR COLD WINTER NIGHTS:
We purposefully keep our house cold in the winter. It’s a habit we are known for in our family! As such, we keep lots of blankets around the house for wrapping up on chilly winter nights. One of my favorites is the Westport Blanket… it’s chunky, cozy and super soft!
I used 8 skeins of Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarn in ‘Dallas Grey’ to make the small size blanket. The finished size is about 37” wide x 37” long. It’s a great ‘lap’ size blanket for me… since I’m about 5’4” tall.
The Westport Blanket knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes from baby blanket up to XXL afghan. It’s very easy to make any of the blanket sizes longer.
Reading and a cozy blanket for a cool fall evening. My ‘Westport Blanket’ is one of my favorite chunky blankets. The book in the photo below is Simon the Fiddler which I just started. I really enjoyed News of the World by the same author. Click here to see some of my other favorite books on Bookshop.org.
The pattern is also available on on Ravelry and Etsy.
A BABY GIFT FOR OLD FAMILY FRIENDS:
Earlier this year, I finished a long overdue baby gift for some dear family friends. The choice of the pattern and yarn color was coordinated with the new mom to go with the nursery design for their baby boy. She picked my All These Places blanket knitting pattern and the ‘Smoky Quartz’ colorway in Lion Brand Yarn Color Made Easy bulky weight yarn. (Unfortunately, this yarn has been discontinued.)
I love how this blanket turned out! The All These Places blanket pattern works really well with either a light or dark colored yarn.
The All These Places blanket knitting pattern is designed for bulky weight yarn. See lots of yarn suggestions in my blog post about bulky yarns for blanket knitting.

AND… THERE ARE SOME IN STORAGE BINS!
While a few blankets have been donated over the years… many of my all time favorite blanket projects are carefully stored in bins. Some of these have been featured in trunk shows at local yarn shops. And, some of my blankets will definitely be used for gift giving in the future!
The photo below shows these blankets before I packed them up to ship to my friends at Yarn Bar. The labels identify the pattern name, yarn used and a few details about the pattern. Click on the links below to get more details about each of the blanket knitting designs shown:
