Touch of Kindness Blanket: Knit and Purl Stitches Create a Reversible Triangular Design
Introducing my new reversible blanket knitting pattern for worsted #4 weight yarn: Touch of Kindness.
The Touch of Kindness blanket design features an easy to knit 10-row repeat stitch pattern. The knit and purl stitch pattern creates an all-over triangle design that is reversible.
Touch of Kindness blanket knitting pattern has instructions for six blanket sizes…from baby blanket up to XXL afghan.
INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
It is said that kindness is always in season. In this strange year of 2020, it seems fair to say that our awareness of the need for kindness, patience and empathy has only been heightened.
Acts of kindness can add a little bright spot to each day. Whether it is stopping to chat with an older neighbor who lives alone, expressing appreciation to someone who has been helpful, or running an errand for an elderly friend… every act of kindness matters.
As I knit this little blue blanket, the repeating triangles made me think of reaching our arms out to one another… with a touch of kindness.
I’m thrilled with how this blanket turned out! The repeating triangle design is modern yet classic.
Using a solid color yarn in a light shade allowed the stitch pattern to shine. I used Blue Sky Fibers ‘Sweater’ heavy worsted weight yarn in the ‘Sea Horse’ colorway. This yarn has fantastic stitch definition which makes the stitch pattern “pop”. (More about the yarn below!)
REVERSIBLE BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:
Here’s a look at both sides of this reversible blanket design…
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:
This blanket pattern, like almost all of my blanket knitting patterns, offers lots of size choices so you can select the size that fits your project needs.
Pick the blanket size that suits the user of the blanket, your yarn budget, the amount of yarn you have on hand, and the amount of time you would like to spend on the project.
Approximate sizes using heavy worsted weight yarn, after blocking...
Baby Blanket: 24.5” wide x 26.5” long
Small Blanket: 27” wide x 31” long
Medium Blanket: 31.5” wide x 33” long
Large Throw: 36” wide x 41” long
XL Throw: 41” wide x 50” long
XXL Afghan: 45.5” wide x 53” long
Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.
Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 1.5” to the length of the project. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.
WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:
Baby: 460 - 480 yards
Small: 610 - 640 yards
Medium: 760 - 800 yards
Large: 1070 - 1120 yards
XL: 1500 - 1600 yards
XXL: 1820 - 1920 yards
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.
Select the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension. Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge….so buy extra yarn just in case!
This pattern will work well with many worsted or heavy worsted or Aran yarns.
The stitch pattern will show up best with a solid color yarn.
For the blanket shown in the photos, I made the Baby size blanket using three skeins of Blue Sky Fibers ‘Sweater’ heavy worsted weight yarn in the ‘Sea Horse’ colorway. I purchased the yarn at Yarn Social in Kansas City, Missouri.
This beautiful yarn is a blend of superwash wool and organic cotton. The stitch definition is fantastic!
Look for Blue Sky Fibers ‘Sweater’ yarn at local yarn shops. Here’s a link to see a directory of shops that stock Blue Sky Fibers yarn.
GAUGE:
Stockinette stitch with US size 8 needles: approximately 16 stitches & 23 rows = 4”
Exact gauge is not essential. This stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.
Keep in mind that a significantly different gauge may require more yarn.
KNITTING NEEDLES:
I used US size 8 knitting needles Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina circular knitting needles.
Choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension. This design will look best with fairly tight stitches.
The blanket is knit flat in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the number of stitches. Click here to read more about this topic on my blog post.
EASY BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:
This pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter.
The 10-row repeat pattern involves only knit and purl stitches.
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
BLOCKING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended. Click here to see my blog post with tips on blocking.
BLOCKING MATS:
A few months ago I purchased a boxed set of Hephaestus Crafts blocking mats that includes nine 12” white mats with grid lines, blocking pins and a tape measure. The grid lines are very helpful for arranging the knitting so the edges are straight.
AFTER BLOCKING (below):
This blanket was completely transformed by blocking.
To give you an idea of how much this blanket changed… before blocking my little blanket measured 24” wide x 22.5” long. After blocking the blanket measures 24.5” wide x 26.5” long. The length increased by 4”!
Blocking greatly improved the appearance of the triangle stitch pattern! And, the garter stitch border is neat and flat.
PRETTY CUSTOMER PROJECT:
Jess knit this pretty baby blanket using the Touch of Kindness blanket knitting pattern. (See her project on Instagram.) She adapted the pattern for DK #3 weight yarn by following the directions for the large size blanket. With the lighter weight yarn and smaller knitting needles the blanket turned out approximately the dimensions of the small size. The yarn is Lion Brand Baby Soft DK #3 weight yarn in the ‘Soft Green’ colorway. Such a lovely project photo! (Photo shared with permission.)
