Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

Place Like Home: Blanket Knitting Pattern with Basket Weave Stitch Pattern

There’s a new blanket knitting pattern in my collection: Place Like Home Blanket.

Place Like Home blanket features a 20-row repeat basket weave stitch pattern framed by a garter stitch border. The stitch pattern is interesting to knit! The perfect combination of knit and purl stitches creates the illusion of woven ribbons of knitting.

This pattern is designed for worsted #4 weight yarn.

This blanket design is the lighter weight version of my popular All These Places blanket pattern for bulky #5 weight yarn. The appearance is the same… but all of the stitch counts are adapted to work with worsted #4 weight yarn.

The blanket is knit in one piece on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the large number of stitches.

The PDF knitting pattern has instructions for six blanket sizes including: baby blanket, large throw and afghan.

If you are using bulky #5 weight yarn… please see my popular All These Places blanket knitting pattern.

BLANKET FEATURING BASKET WEAVE STITCH PATTERN:

This is an easy knitting project for a confident knitter.  The pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

The featured stitch pattern is a 20-row repeat which requires attention to keep track of which row is being worked.  It's not hard... it’s just not as easy as some of my other knitting patterns.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, change back and forth from knit to purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Place Like Home blanket knitting pattern. The name of this pattern was inspired by Dorothy’s famous line in The Wizard of Oz: “There’s no place like home”. Click here to buy the PDF pattern.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

As you may have guessed, the name for the Place Like Home blanket knitting pattern is inspired by Dorothy’s famous line in The Wizard of Oz: “There’s no place like home.”

Since I live in Kansas, I couldn’t resist using a name inspired by the movie most commonly associated with my state!

Each home has a unique assortment of colors, furniture, mementos, photographs, art work, family heirlooms, and much more.  Over time, the significance of our personal items is woven together with cherished memories of everyday events, traditions and special occasions.

Our homes are a place to create our own space that tells our own story.  Hopefully, when you step through the door at home… you feel a sense of connection… that your place is like no other.  It’s your place like home.

SOME THINGS THAT MAKE KNITTER’S HOMES FEEL SPECIAL:

I asked my test knitters for this blanket pattern to share one or two things that make their home feel special to them.  Here are their responses (some edited for length and all shared with permission):

  • My hand knit shawls and blankets are placed around my home.  The sight and feel of them signals that I am home.

  • A beautiful wooden coffee table my husband built for our sitting room.  It is often covered with yarn and other crafting supplies!

  • The lovely canyon view we have from our office/knitting room.

  • Having my own handmade items scattered throughout my home.

  • My cat sleeping on my lap as I knit making my home feel warm and safe.

  • Our dog and cat who greet us when we get home.

  • The smell of food cooking.

  • A small blackboard where my family leaves messages to each other.

  • The bird décor in my house including paintings, cross stitches and metal.  My mother has always loved birds, especially because her mother really loved them.  I never got to meet my grandmother, but a love of birds has always made me feel close to her and my mother.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

This blanket pattern, like almost all of my blanket knitting patterns, offers lots of size choices so you can select the size that fits your project needs.

Approximate sizes using worsted #4 weight yarn, after blocking...

Baby Blanket: 26.5” wide x 32” long
Small Blanket: 30.5” wide x 37” long
Medium Blanket: 34.5” wide x 45” long
Large Throw: 36.5” wide x 48” long
XL Throw: 40.5” wide x 50.5” long
XXL Afghan: 46.5” wide x 56” long

The PDF pattern has details on how to adjust the length and/or width of any blanket size.

Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2.5” to the length of the project. The PDF pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.

In the PDF knitting pattern there are details on how to add additional stitches to change the width of the blanket.

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

The knitting needles I used are ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needles. This is a luxury purchase that I wish I bought sooner! I’ve been extremely pleased with the excellent quality of these knitting needles.

WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby Blanket: 750 - 780 yards
Small Blanket: 1140 - 1200 yards
Medium Blanket: 1380 - 1450 yards
Large Throw: 1600 - 1680 yards
XL Throw: 1900 - 2000 yards
XXL Afghan: 2400 - 2500 yards

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project. The PDF pattern includes estimates for how much yarn is needed to make each size longer.

Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on the yarn used and exact gauge. Continue reading for more info about yarn options and gauge.

The stitch pattern looks attractive with solid color yarns, as well as gently variegated hand dyed colorways.

If you are using bulky #5 weight yarn… please see the All These Places blanket knitting pattern.

I USED MALABRIGO RIOS WORSTED #4 YARN:

For the mint green colored blanket shown in the photos, I made the Baby size blanket using four skeins (about 730 yards) of Malabrigo Rios worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Water Greencolorway. This yarn is 100% superwash wool that is hand dyed. The stitch definition is wonderful so the basket weave stitch pattern shows up beautifully.

Shop for Malabrigo Rios yarn at many local yarn shops or shop online from Jimmy Beans Wool.

This pattern will work well with many worsted, heavy worsted or Aran #4 weight yarns.  For best appearance of the stitch pattern, I recommend a solid or gently variegated hand dyed yarn.

For more yarn suggestions… see my blog post about more than 25 worsted weight yarns for blanket knitting.

GAUGE:

Pattern stitch with US size 7 needles: approximately 20 stitches & 28-29 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential. Choose the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension.

TEST GAUGE WITH YOUR YARN AND KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US 7 knitting needles. But, we all knit differently! One of my test knitters used US 4 knitting needles and the exact same yarn as I did (Malabrigo Rios worsted). Another test knitter used US 6 knitting needles with Malabrigo Rios. Remarkably, even with three different knitting needle sizes, each of us had nearly identical gauge.

I highly recommend doing some test knitting with your yarn and knitting needles to choose the needle size that works best for your yarn and knitting tension.

The PDF pattern includes information on testing gauge in the pattern stitch.

Keep in mind that a significantly different gauge will impact the size of the finished project and may require more (or less) yarn.

If you have more stitches per 4”, your blanket will turn out smaller than indicated in the pattern.

If you have fewer stitches per 4”, your blanket will turn out larger.

CIRCULAR KNITTING NEEDLES:

The blanket is knit flat in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the number of stitches. Click here to read more about this topic on my blog post.

I used US size 7 circular knitting needles with Malabrigo Rios worsted #4 weight yarn. See notes above about why it’s important to do some testing knitting with your yarn and knitting needles.

My new favorite knitting needles are ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace Interchangeable Circular Knitting Needles. This is a luxury purchase that I wish I bought sooner! I’ve been extremely pleased with the excellent quality. The advantage of the set of interchangeable knitting needles is having all the needle sizes in one handy case, along with a choice of three cord lengths. It’s easy to select a needle tip size and the appropriate cord length and then attach the needle tips to the cord. If you find you need a different needle size… simple change the needle tips. I purchased this set at Yarn Social in Kansas City, Missouri. SHOP: Available at many Local Yarn Shops | Yarn Social in Kansas City | Amazon

If you prefer to purchase one fixed set of circular knitting needles ChiaoGoo offers 40” fixed length knitting needles in a range of needle sizes.

My “Place Like Home” blanket on the knitting needles. I used Malabrigo Rios worsted #4 weight yarn in the lovely ‘Water Green’ colorway. The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the large number of stitches.

A LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE BLANKET:

The photo below shows the blanket folded back to show the wrong side. I do not consider this pattern reversible.

Here’s a look at the back of the blanket. This is a one-sided design… not reversible. Click here to buy the PDF knitting pattern.

BLOCKING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended.  It’s amazing how much better a project can look after taking the time to block the knitting.

Blocking involves soaking the knitting in a bowl or sink full of cold water, draining the excess water off and laying the project flat to dry. To get all the step-by-step details… click here to see my blog post with tips on blocking.

Before blocking the top and bottom garter stitch borders were very wavy because the stitch pattern in the center of the blanket tends to bunch together. Blocking solves that issue! See photo below. Get all the step-by-step details in my blog post about blocking.

After blocking the bottom garter stitch border is neat and flat. The basket weave stitch pattern is smoothed out and looks attractive. Get all the step-by-step details in my blog post about blocking.

MANY THANKS TO TEST KNITTERS:

Over the last couple of months, ten knitters assisted me by test knitting this pattern. It is very meaningful to me that knitters are willing to give their time, and use their yarn, to be part of this process. Two exceptionally attractive project photos are shared below with permission.

Rhetta used six skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Worsted in the ‘Fisherman’ colorway to knit the small size blanket. (See below.) The light yarn color shows off the stitch pattern beautifully! Rhetta told me that she has years of experience with crochet and took up knitting only six months ago. See more of Rhetta’s project photos on Ravelry.

This Place Like Home blanket was knit with Lion Brand Wool Ease Worsted in the ‘Fisherman’ colorway.

Amanda used 7.5 skeins of Fiddlesticks Grange 10 worsted yarn in the ‘Rust’ colorway to make the medium size blanket. Fiddlesticks Grange 10 is an Australian yarn that is a blend of wool, alpaca and acrylic. Isn’t this an attractive project photo?! It’s a fun composition with the woman’s face on the decorative pillow gazing down at the beautiful hand knit blanket. Click here to see Amanda’s project on Ravelry.
