Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

These Days Blanket: An easy to knit reversible blanket

These Days Blanket: An easy to knit reversible blanket

I'm so excited to introduce my new reversible blanket knitting pattern: These Days Blanket.

These Days Blanket knitting pattern is easy to knit with worsted weight yarn.

The design features a six-row repeat stitch pattern that creates a modern ‘triangle-in-a-square’ texture that is reversible! The blanket looks exactly the same on both sides.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

I named this pattern These Days because the stitch pattern reminds me of the boxes on my paper calendar, where I write notes about each day.  In my desk drawer, I have over 20 years of my month-at-a-glance calendars.  I don't pull them out often, but I value having them.

Some days bring life’s biggest challenges.

Other days bring happy, memorable occasions.

And, some of the best days are the delightfully ordinary days.

Keeping notes on my calendar about each day helps me remember to enjoy these days

One of my desk drawers holds 20+ years of my ‘month-at-a-glance’ paper calendars.

I love how this blanket turned out! Modern, yet classic. The light colored yarn allows the interesting stitch pattern to shine. I used Juniper Moon Farms ‘Moonshine’ yarn in the ‘Moonbeam’ colorway. (More about the yarn below!)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

This blanket pattern….like almost all of my blanket knitting patterns…offers lots of size choices so you may select the size that fits your project needs. Pick the size that suits your purpose, your yarn budget, the amount of yarn you have on hand, and the amount of time you would like to spend on the project.

Approximate sizes using worsted weight yarn, after blocking...

Baby: 27” wide x 30” long
Small: 30” wide x 34” long
Medium: 33.5” wide x 37” long
Large: 36” wide x 41” long
XL: 39” wide x 48” long
XXL: 46” wide x 54” long

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about .75” to the length of the project. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.

WORSTED WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 760 - 780 yards
Small: 950 - 980 yards
Medium: 1140 - 1180 yards
Large: 1350 - 1400 yards
XL: 1700 - 1800 yards
XXL: 2300 - 2400 yards

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.

If you prefer bulky weight yarn, please see my Little Moments blanket pattern that uses the same stitch pattern.

Select the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension. Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge….so buy extra yarn just in case!

This pattern will work well with many worsted weight yarns.

The stitch pattern will show up best with a solid color yarn.

For the blanket shown in the photos, I used four skeins of Juniper Moon Farm ‘Moonshine’ worsted weight yarn in the ‘Moonbeam’ colorway. This beautiful yarn is a blend of alpaca, wool and silk. It’s lovely and luxurious!  Shop for this beautiful yarn online from The Woolery, at local yarn shops (see a partial list on Ravelry) or on LoveCrafts.com.

OTHER YARN OPTIONS:

As I mentioned above… this pattern will look best with a solid color yarn.

The pattern will look great with many different yarns and fibers including 100% wool, superwash wool, cotton, acrylic/wool blends and more.

And, the pattern is very adaptable to light worsted, worsted and heavy worsted yarns. Here are a few suggestions:

Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (100% Superwash Merino Wool) – More than 117,000 projects have been shared by knitters on Ravelry… making it one of the top 10 most popular yarns.  I used this yarn for my Prairie Fields blanket and it knit up beautifully on US 7 knitting needles.  Machine washable and dryable.  Shop: Jimmy Beans Wool | Local Yarn Shops | LoveCrafts | WEBS Yarn Store

Knit Picks Shine Worsted (60% Pima Cotton / 40% Modal) - This pleasantly soft and silky yarn comes in the cutest little 75 yard skeins. The yarn has just a bit of sheen that gives a polished look. Lovely selection of more than 30 colorways. After test knitting with a couple needle sizes… I would suggest trying a US 6 knitting needle with this yarn. Great stitch definition. Machine washable and tumble dry low. Shop: Exclusively from KnitPicks.com

Blue Sky Fibers Sweater (55% Superwash Wool / 45% Certified Organic Cotton) - This is one of my favorite yarns for blanket projects.  It has excellent stitch definition that blocks beautifully.  There’s a reason why I have turned to this yarn again and again for blanket designs… it’s simply lovely.  Fabulous selection of both vibrant and neutral colorways.  Shop: Yarn Social in Kansas City, Missouri | Local Yarn Shops | LoveCrafts

See lots more yarn suggestions in my blog post about 25+ worsted weight yarns for blanket knitting.

I used Blue Sky Fiber’s Spud & Chloe ‘Sweater’ in the ‘Sweet Roll’ colorway for my Looking Forward blanket pattern. The stitch definition is fantastic making the triangular stitch pattern very distinctive.

GAUGE:

Pattern stitch with US size 7 needles: approximately 19 stitches & 30 rows = 4”

The pattern instructions include directions for testing gauge using the stitch pattern.

Though exact gauge is not essential, this stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.

Significantly different gauge may require more yarn.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 7 knitting needles Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina circular knitting needles.

Choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension. This design will look best with fairly tight stitches.

The blanket is knit flat, back and forth on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the number of stitches. Click here to read more about this topic on my blog post.

EASY KNITTING PATTERN:

This pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended.  Click here to see my blog post with tips on blocking.

Before blocking….the garter stitch border was wavy and would not stay flat…

Before blocking…the edge of the blanket was wavy. Blocking completely transformed this project! Please click here to read my blog post about how to block a blanket.

After blocking (below) the stitch pattern ‘pops’ and the edges of the blanket are neat and square. I love how this blanket turned out!
