All These Places Blanket: Inspired by Childhood Memories Woven Together
One year ago this month, I published my All These Places blanket knitting pattern and I’m so happy that it has quickly become a customer favorite!
All These Places blanket is fun to knit with bulky weight yarn. A 20-row repeat stitch pattern creates an interesting basket-weave style design. The blanket is framed by a garter stitch border.
The knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes. Read all the details below!
The pattern is also available in my Etsy shop.
As of October 2022, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 215 projects using the All These Places blanket pattern. On Ravelry the pattern has a 4.9 out of 5 rating for clarity of instructions and overall results. Scroll down to see a few customer projects.
SIX BLANKET SIZES:
Baby Blanket: 27.75” wide x 35” long
Small Blanket: 31” wide x 39.5” long
Medium Throw: 34.5” wide x 44” long
Large Throw: 41.25” wide x 48.5” long
XL Afghan: 44.5” wide x 53” long
XXL Afghan: 51.5” wide x 62” long
Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 4.5” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size blankets longer.
BULKY WEIGHT YARN:
Baby Blanket: 550 - 580 yards
Small Blanket: 690 - 730 yards
Medium Throw: 860 - 900 yards
Large Throw: 1150 - 1200 yards
XL Afghan: 1330 - 1400 yards
XXL Afghan: 1850 - 1950 yards
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.
The pattern may also be used with slightly lighter yarns. To adapt for worsted or Aran weight yarn, follow the instructions for 2 - 3 sizes larger than desired finished dimensions.
Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge….so buy extra yarn just in case!
I used Lion Brand Yarn 'Color Made Easy' bulky weight yarn in the colorway 'Basalt'. This yarn has been discontinued. See yarn suggestions below!

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
All these places bring back fond memories from my childhood...memories woven together with love for the people who were there...
My grandparents' home...that inspired the name Fifty Four Ten Studio. The house number was 5410. They purchased the home when my mother was a girl. I was very young when they sold the house but the memories are preserved through photos of cousins dressed up and posing by the front door.
My other grandparents' home...and the living room where we gathered and celebrated every Christmas Eve.
My childhood home...and the little room where my mother let me use her sewing machine anytime I wanted.
Stores in Kansas City's Brookside neighborhood where I grew up...especially The Dime Store where we shopped frequently. I remember the wide selection of merchandise - toys, gifts, office supplies, greeting cards, seasonal decorations, household essentials, etc. - displayed floor to ceiling, the well-worn hardwood floors, the owner greeting us when we walked in the door, and buying our school supplies there every fall before the start of the school year.

KNITTING NEEDLES:
The project is worked flat, back and forth on circular knitting needles. Circular knitting needles are necessary in order to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket. Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.
I used US size 10.5 Clover Takumi Bamboo circular needles - 36” length. I have several sets of these needles and use them often. (When the needles are new…the cord can be a sort of stiff. Just hold it in warm water for a bit to loosen it up.) Another needle option that I use often (but don’t own in the US 10.5 size!) is Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina circular. I like a 32” length.
Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension. The goal is to find the knitting needle that gives the best stitch appearance, without being too tight...or too loose.
A LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE BLANKET:
Knitters often ask what the wrong side (or back) of this blanket looks like. I don’t consider this design reversible.
BLOCKING OF FINISHED BLANKET HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
For best appearance, blocking of the finished blanket is highly recommended.
As you can see in the photos below, the stockinette stitch area between the garter stitch squares tends to pucker and look bumpy. The knitting also tends to gather in at the center a bit. Blocking removed all these issues!
Click here to see all of my blocking tips including step-by-step photos.
I made the medium size blanket which measured about 28" wide x 43" long before blocking. After blocking...the same blanket measures 34.5" wide x 44" long....the width changed by more than 6"!
Careful blocking will remove these issues! Read all of my tips and see step-by-step photos on this blog post.
CUSTOMER PROJECTS!
As of February 2023, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 230 projects using the All These Places blanket pattern. And, the pattern has a 4.9 out of 5 rating for overall results and clarity of instructions on Ravelry.
Carla shared this navy blue ‘All These Places’ blanket on Ravelry. She used Kramer Yarns Perfection Chunky in 'Admiral'. When I emailed Carla to ask if I could use her project photo, she told me this was her 10th finished knitting project...and when she made this blanket she had only been knitting for about four months. It looks fabulous!
The lovely gray blanket below was made by Jennifer. This was her first blanket project! Jennifer shared on Instagram that she made two of these blankets while a family member was battling illness. It's heartwarming to know that knitting brought her some comfort as she reflected on happy memories when they traveled to many interesting places.
Derek made this fabulous gray ‘All These Places’ blanket (below) that he shared on Ravelry. He used 'Oxford Grey' Lion Brand Pound of Love...knitting two strands together on US 11 knitting needles. Knitting two strands of worsted weight yarn together is a great way to substitute for bulky weight yarn. I love this close up photo of his project....beautiful stitches!
Here are a few more 'All These Places' blanket projects that have caught my eye:
A stunning orange throw shared on Ravelry.
A lovely red blanket that adds just the right amount of color to a Ravelry knitter's office.
And, this amazing blue blanket that @knittingsurprise made for her grandson.
I would love to see your All These Places blanket project! Share your project on Ravelry and on Instagram with tags: #alltheseplacesblanket #fiftyfourtenstudio and @fiftyfourtenstudio.
SKILLS NEEDED:
This is an easy knitting project for a confident knitter. The pattern is a 20 row repeat so it does require some attention to keep track of which row is being worked. It's not hard... it’s just not as easy as some of my other knitting patterns.
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, change back and forth from knit to purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

BABY BLANKET PROJECT:
This week I’m finishing up the details on a baby blanket project using my ‘All These Places’ blanket pattern.
I used Lion Brand Color Made Easy yarn in the lovely ‘Smoky Quartz’ colorway. FEB 2021 UPDATE: Unfortunately, this yarn has been discontinued. See yarn recommendations earlier in this post.
The new mom picked out this pretty color to go with the nursery color scheme. I’m so happy to finally get this little blanket finished up for their baby boy!
Thank you so much for reading!
Happy knitting!
