The On the Map blanket is an easy knitting pattern for confident knitters. The center of the blanket features an 8-row repeat stitch pattern of stockinette stitch with neat rows of tiny “squares” created by purl stitches. The blanket is knit in one piece including the seed stitch border.

This classic blanket knitting pattern is designed for worsted #4 weight yarn.

The pattern includes instructions for six (6) blanket sizes from baby blanket up to XXL afghan.

I love maps! In fact, I prefer a real paper map to modern GPS technology. I bring our well worn 2005 Rand McNally Atlas on every family road trip. Dots, arrows and notes have been written on the map to note locations of favorite restaurants and convenient gas station stops, as well as travel dates and times, for just about every trip we’ve taken in the last 20 years. It’s sort of like a trip journal!

DIRECTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…

Baby: 28.5” wide x 31” long
Small: 30” wide x 34” long
Medium: 33” wide x 43.5” long
Large: 38” wide x 46.5” long
XL: 42.5” wide x 50” long
XXL: 47.5” wide x 53” long

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Pattern includes instructions for adding width or length to any size.

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 1.5” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.

WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 600 - 620 yards
Small: 710 - 730 yards
Medium: 970 - 1000 yards
Large: 1240 - 1280 yards
XL: 1500 - 1550 yards
XXL: 1750 - 1850 yards

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.

I used Valley Yarns ‘Valley Superwash’ in the color ‘Colonial Blue’ from WEBS Yarn Store.

The stitch pattern will show up best with a solid color yarn. See lots of yarn suggestions in my blog post about worsted #4 weight yarns for blanket knitting.

The pattern may also be used with slightly lighter or heavier weight yarns. Select the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn. Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge….so buy extra yarn just in case!

GAUGE:

Stockinette stitch with US size 9 needles: approximately 15 stitches & 21 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential.

I used US size 9 knitting needles…but choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension.

Significantly different gauge may require more yarn.

CIRCULAR NEEDLES:

Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles.

In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are recommended.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of finished knitting is recommended.

This pattern is written in ENGLISH using standard U.S. knitting terms.

Written pattern with row by row instructions.

I’m really enjoying this one. It’s an easy relaxed knit, with just enough pattern....great for public knitting because I can work on it while holding a conversation.

I loved this pattern - It’s so straightforward and simple. Yet, it’s really beautiful and easy to memorize.
