Westport Blanket Knitting Pattern: Easy to Knit and a Customer Favorite
Over the last several years, I have designed a lot of blanket knitting patterns and the Westport Blanket knitting pattern is still one of my favorites! And, since it’s one of my all time best-selling knitting patterns it’s also a customer favorite.
The Westport Blanket is very easy to knit with super bulky yarn and US 13 knitting needles. This pattern is a great choice for confident beginners.
The knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes. Read all the details below!

KNITTING SKILLS NEEDED:
The Westport Blanket pattern is very easy to knit!
This is a great pattern for beginners who know how to knit and purl confidently. Experienced knitters also enjoy using this pattern because it’s relaxing and easy to knit.
You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
The pattern is also available on Etsy.
I’m thrilled that this design has become a customer favorite for baby blankets, throws and afghans. The simple, geometric design looks great in any decor.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:
The Westport Blanket is named for the oldest neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri...my hometown. The area was settled, starting in about 1835, along the Santa Fe Trail. Businesses in Westport provided goods for those traveling west.
The garter stitch frames the little ‘windows’ and the overall design reminds me of the old brick buildings that line the streets of Westport. If you are ever in Kansas City...my two favorite shops in the Westport area are Pryde's (a fabulous kitchen store in a really charming building) and Yarn Social...a lovely little yarn shop!
Though the design is inspired by very old buildings, the knitting pattern has a simple, modern appearance.

I used Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarn in the color "Dallas Grey" for this blanket. I have used this yarn for several blanket designs including my Over the Rooftops blanket knitting pattern. The best place to find all of the color options for Lion Brand Hometown super bulky yarn is on the Lion Brand website. This yarn is 100% acrylic, easy care and very reasonably priced. And, it’s very soft!
SUPER BULKY YARN OPTIONS:
This pattern will work well with many super bulky yarns. The design will show up best with a solid color yarn.
Lion Brand Hometown (100% Acrylic) - For the gray blanket shown in the photos above I used Lion Brand Hometown in 'Dallas Grey'. This yarn is very soft… but also has great stitch definition so the pattern really ‘pops’. It’s easy to knit with and very economical. See some of my favorite colorways in the photo below! Note that “print” colorways have 64 yards per skein… slightly less than the 81 yards per skein in the solid colorways. Shop: LionBrand.com | LoveCrafts.com | Amazon in single skein or multi-skein packs
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic / 20% Wool) - I have used this yarn for many blanket projects including my Winter Dance Blanket, Third Street Blanket and Game Time Blanket. Fantastic stitch definition. Wide selection of colorways that work great for home décor including: Slate (medium gray), Driftwood (medium stone), Charcoal (dark gray), Cilantro (deep olive green), Denim (dark denim blue), Peanut (tan), and Spice (dark burnt orange). Shop: LionBrand.com | LoveCrafts.com | Amazon for multi-skein packs
Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick (100% Recycled Polyester) – This is the “new kid on the block” and it’s worth a look! The yarn is spun from 100% recycled plastics. It’s surprisingly soft with fantastic stitch definition. I am using this yarn for a new blanket design and I’m really impressed with the texture. Generously sized skeins contain 223 yards (340 grams). Attractive collection of muted colorways. Hand wash and lay flat to dry. Shop: LionBrand.com | Amazon
Plymouth Encore Mega (75% Acrylic / 25% Wool) - A great choice for blanket projects. Here’s two attractive examples shared on Ravelry: a River of Dreams bed runner blanket and a cozy Boulevard Blanket. Shop: Yarn Barn of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas (ships to US locations) | Local Yarn Shops | LoveCrafts.com
Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Super Bulky (100% Extra Fine Superwash Merino Wool) - This yarn is lovely! It’s soft and ‘springy’ with fantastic stitch definition. A couple years ago, WEBS Yarn Store featured my Westport Blanket in their store catalog with a store sample knit up in the ‘Burgundy’ colorway (shown below). Note: WEBS offers everyday shopping discounts. Shop: Exclusively at WEBS Yarn Store
Cascade Yarns Lana Grande (100% Peruvian Highland Wool) - More than 35 beautiful color choices. Hand wash and lay flat to dry. Jan made this stunning Westport Blanket project (shown below) using the ‘Golden Olive’ colorway. Her blanket and photo look so lovely… and ready for a home decorating magazine! KNITTING NEEDLES:
The project is worked flat in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles. Circular knitting needles are necessary in order to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket.
Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.
I used US size 13 circular Knitter's Pride Nova Platina knitting needles that are 32” in length. I've used them for many projects and would definitely recommend these knitting needles.
Another knitting needle option that is a little less expensive is Clover Takumi Bamboo circular needles - 36” length is a great option.
Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn and knitting tension. The goal is to find the knitting needle that gives the best stitch appearance, without being too tight... or too loose.
A LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE BLANKET:
Knitters often ask what the wrong side (or back) of this blanket looks like. I don’t consider this design reversible.
BLOCKING RECOMMENDED:
For best appearance, blocking of the finished blanket is suggested. It's not essential with this project but it does improve the appearance of the finished blanket.

CUSTOMER PROJECTS!
As of October 2023, Ravelry knitters have shared more than 120 projects using the Westport Blanket pattern. And, the pattern has a 4.8 out of 5 overall rating on Ravelry and a 5 out of 5 star rating for clarity of instructions.
Patti has made several blankets using my knitting patterns. She sent me this photo of the Westport Blanket she made for a birthday gift... neatly folded and boxed up for gift giving. It looks absolutely lovely!
Last April, I received a sweet message from Moza sharing this lovely work-in-progress photo of the Westport Blanket. Her blanket looks gorgeous!! The light, neutral yarn color allows her beautiful stitches to shine. She is using DMC Natura Just Cotton XL yarn in the ‘Cream’ colorway. It’s a super bulky weight yarn that’s available in 30 colorways.
Moza lives in UAE - United Arab Emirates. It’s such a joy to be able to exchange messages with knitters who live on the other side of the world from me! I grew up in the 1970’s and 80’s so I will never take for granted how amazing this experience is thanks to technology.
The gray blanket below was made by Jenny. She used Bernatt Softee Chunky super bulky yarn in the 'True Grey' colorway. Her finished blanket looks fabulous!
Jane made this fabulous blanket as a gift for her 19 year old nephew who has recently moved into a school dorm. Such a thoughtful gift!
Here's a couple more Westport Blanket projects that have caught my eye:
A sweet little baby blanket Melissa shared on Instagram.
A bright blue blanket Frieda made as a birthday gift for a Cubs baseball fan and shared on Instagram.
