When I planned this blanket design in early 2020, the name Take a Sunrise was inspired by a line from a song in a favorite childhood movie: “who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew”.  I started knitting this blanket in early March, thankful for a project to keep me busy as news in the world became more unsettling.  One morning, I worked on knitting this orange blanket and watched the sun come up… like it always does… and the name for this blanket design took on new meaning.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended. Click here to see my blog post for tips on blocking your finished blanket.

This pattern is written in English using standard U.S. knitting terms.

SIX BLANKET SIZES:

Approximate sizes after blocking…

Baby Blanket: 27.5” wide x 32.5” long
Small Blanket: 30” wide x 36.5” long
Medium Blanket: 32.5” wide x 40.5” long
Large Throw: 37” wide x 44.5” long
XL Afghan: 44.5” wide x 53” long
XXL Afghan: 49.5” wide x 61” long

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 4” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.

WORSTED OR ARAN WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 620 - 640 yards
Small: 770 - 800 yards
Medium: 930 - 960 yards
Large: 1180 - 1230 yards
XL: 1660 - 1760 yards
XXL: 2200 - 2300 yards

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.

For best appearance of stitch pattern texture, solid color yarn or hand dyed yarns with subtle color variations recommended.

The pattern may also be used with slightly lighter or heavier weight yarns. Select the needle size that gives the best appearance for your yarn. Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge….so buy extra yarn just in case!

I used Blue Sky Fibers 'Sweater' yarn in the 'Pollen' colorway.  This yarn is made of 55% superwash wool and 45% certified organic cotton and is part of the Blue Sky Fibers family of yarns.  I am a huge fan of this beautiful yarn. Shop: Yarn Social in Kansas City, Missouri | Local Yarn Shops

GAUGE:

Stockinette stitch with US size 8 needles: approximately 16 stitches & 23 rows = 4”

Though exact gauge is not essential, this stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches. Select needle size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your knitting tension.

A significantly different gauge may require more (or less) yarn.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

Blanket knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the large number of stitches. Click here for my blog post about knitting a blanket with long circular needles.
