This temperature blanket is knit in garter stitch in three panels that are seamed together. Select 10 - 25 colors of worsted #4 weight yarn to represent the daily temperature for your location for one calendar year. Decide on 5° or 10° temperature increments and assign one yarn color to each temperature category.

Each blanket panel is about 15” wide. The first panel (on the left) represents the first four months of the year. The center panel represents early May through September 1st. And, the third panel (on the right) represents the last four months of the year ending at the bottom right corner with December 31st.

FINISHED SIZE: Approximately 45” wide x 58” long - the perfect size for a large cozy afghan.

One of the things I noticed when researching temperature blanket knitting projects is that knitters often end up with an extremely large blanket… perhaps much larger than they anticipated when starting the project. Knitting the blanket in three panels makes a manageable, usable size temperature blanket. See notes below about making the blanket smaller by using lighter weight yarn.

YARN: Worsted #4 weight yarn in assorted colors

I used Berroco Vintage #4 weight worsted yarn in Black Cherry, Pumpkin, Marmalade, Butternut, Rye, Smoke, Overcast, Sage, Twilight, Breezeway, Jalapeno, Acai, Douglas Fir and Charcoal. Shop: Jimmy Beans Wool | Local Yarn Shops

YARDAGE: At least 2,900 – 3,100 yards of worsted weight yarn in an assortment of 10 - 25 yarn colors.

For more details about yardage and yarn suggestions see my blog post about planning a temperature blanket project.

GAUGE: Garter stitch with US size 8 needles: 18 sts & 34 rows (17 garter ridges) = 4”

Take time to check gauge by casting on 25 - 30 stitches and knit every row (garter stitch) for 5”. Exact gauge is not essential. Select needle size that gives best appearance for your choice of yarn and your knitting tension. A different gauge may require more (or less) yarn and impact the finished size.

MAKE A SMALLER BLANKET: This pattern may also be used with DK #3 weight yarn to make a smaller blanket. Assuming gauge is about 22 sts x 40 rows (20 garter ridges) = 4”… the blanket would turn out approximately 37” wide x 48” long. The yardage required will be less than noted below.
